With Gudu & Friends Vol. 1, Peggy Gou’s Gudu label debuts a brand-new yearly Various Artists compilation series. With contributions from Closet Yi, Salamanda, Lady Blacktronika, and others.
Gudu was founded in 2019 and has since produced multiple hit songs from Peggy Gou (including “I Go” and “Nabi”). Gudu started with “Starry Night,” one of Peggy Gou’s most popular tracks to date. However, Gudu’s narrative is not entirely told by Peggy’s song.
Gudu has hosted the music of a genuinely international array of musicians since its founding, including the UK’s DMX Krew and JRMS, Italy’s Hiver and Dukwa, South Korea’s Mogwaa, Indonesia’s Dea, Ukraine’s Brain de Palma, South Africa’s Riff, and the USA’s Maurice Fulton. As well as hosting its own stage at Peggy’s annual Pleasure Gardens event, it has sponsored label showcases around Europe.
On Gudu & Friends Vol. 1, the label’s follow-up to previous EPs from DMX Krew and Mogwaa, including eight tracks of brand-new music from both known Gudu label artists and label newcomers. The label’s current roster is represented by DMX Krew, Mogwaa, Hiver, Dukwa, and Brain de Palma, while two of South Korea’s most promising artists, Closet Yi and Salamanda, provide two very different tracks: the ravey, breaks-driven “Sonder” and the wide-eyed, mallet-led “Mockingbird.” Last but not least, Lady Blacktronika, the First Lady of Beatdown, delivers the mesmerizing rhythm of “He Can Never Love You,” a classic LB track that she always manages to turn warped and spooky.
The artwork for every Gudu & Friends collection will be related to the lunar new year. The artwork for Gudu & Friends Vol. 1 was created by Gudu Mix series creator Jin Young Choi and honors the year of the rabbit.
